How is CrossIron Mills is being sustainable?

Food Hall Waste Diversion System
Have you noticed something new in the Food Hall? We’ve implemented a waste sorting program! Plastics, Organics, Paper, and Cardboard are all sorted on site into separate waste streams and sent offsite to be recycled. With this new program, we expect to increase our landfill diversion rate by 20%.

Building Automation System
Coming Soon. By the end of the summer, we will implement our new
Building Automation System. This new investment allows us to reduce the use of energy-intensive heating and cooling systems during off-peak hours. On a yearly basis, this new system is estimated to reduce our CO2 emissions by the equivalent of 1.7 million kilometers driven by a car!

Water Cisterns
Do you feel the flow underneath your feet?
There are giant water cisterns underground around the property. These giant containers collect rainwater, and we use it to water all our landscaping! In total, the tanks hold over 1 million liters of water.

Urban Garden
Coming Soon. In Spring 2024, we’re getting our very own Urban Garden! Our urban farm will grow a variety of fruits, vegetables, fine herbs and edible flowers, which will be donated to the Airdrie Food Bank. Urban farms help reduce greenhouse gasses and preserve biodiversity.
